The acid mantle is a very thin, slightly acidic layer on your skin that helps protect you from bacteria, viruses, chemicals and other contaminants—and maintaining a healthy acid mantle is the key to younger-looking skin. As the skin ages, it loses elasticity and firmness due to a breakdown in collagen and elastin.
