South Austin Sam’s Club® Offers New Ways to Save

AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 26, 2011 – South Austin residents will find new value and savings when Sam’s Club opens Oct. 6. Serving the community since 1988, the newly relocated club will celebrate its official grand opening with a Texas-pride themed ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Doors will open to members immediately following the ceremony. FourSquare users can check-in for specials at the Sam’s Club café while supplies last.

Originally opened at 5107 Highway 35, the 137,714-square-foot club will now be located at 9900 S. Highway 35 in the new business corridor of Southpark Meadows. The relocated Austin Sam’s Club offers members a wide variety of merchandise that reflects the growing diversity among warehouse club shoppers. The club now has extra shelf space for expanded Hispanic and Texas-made foods, including a variety of teas.

“We know our members are looking for value on everyday needs like gas and fresh groceries,” said Sam’s Club Manager Randy Wright. “Our relocated club will offer additional savings and new services to South Austin, including a fuel station now offering diesel fuel, a one-hour photo lab and a hearing center.”

In addition, the Austin Sam’s Club offers home meal solutions for families, freshly baked breads and pastries and a deli department with rotisserie chicken, ribs and freshly prepared meals. Sam’s Club also offers exclusive brands, Artisan Fresh and Daily Chef that providemembers with delicious and affordable skillfully prepared foods that deliver extraordinary value on everyday needs.

The Sam’s Club pharmacy features $4 and $10 generic prescriptions, as well as savings on branded prescriptions, a hearing center and an optical department. Sam’s Club also offers free monthly health screenings to help members take charge of their health through preventative measures, as well as product offerings like the Prevention Plan and an exclusive line of Simply Right wellness and nutrition items.

The club plans to employ approximately 180 associates, including approximately 60 new positions created by the relocation. Thirty of the South Austin associates have worked for Sam’s Club or Walmart for more than 10 years. Four associates – Sabas Amaya, Vivian Rivas, Mary Tello and Johnny Villela – have worked at Sam’s Club since it opened in Austin in 1988. Club manager Randy Wright started his career with Sam’s Club as an hourly associate at the Mansfield, Texas location in 1988.

Sam’s Club Community Commitment

As part of the Sam’s Club commitment to give back to the communities it serves, associates from the Austin Club have selected several local organizations to receive more than $10,000 in grants from the Walmart Foundation, including W. Charles Akins High School ROTC, Austin Police Department, Celebration of Love, Colin’s Hope, Mendez Middle School, Bastrop Fire Department, Bastrop Food Pantry, Bastrop Middle School and Travis Association for the Blind.

“This December will be our ninth annual Celebration of Love outreach program and I am proud to say that Sam's Club has been right by our side since the very beginning in 2003. We are so grateful for the partnership and could not do what we do without Sam’s Club’s support,” said Celebration of Love Executive Director Mike Hogan. “With this contribution alone, 100 Austin area families in crisis will receive food for the holiday season – a frozen turkey and all of the trimmings for a holiday meal.”

The newly relocated Sam’s Club also fights hunger in the area by making regular product donations to Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. The program is part of a partnership between Sam’s Club and Feeding America. Sam’s Club locations across the country regularly donate perishable food items to area hunger relief agencies, helping fight hunger in their communities and reducing food waste. Last year, Sam’s Club donated more than 13 million pounds to Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief charity.

Grand Opening Event

The grand opening ceremony will take place at 8:30 a.m., Oct. 6 with local dignitaries, including members of the Austin Chamber of Commerce and members of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, joining store associates and club manager Randy Wright. Members of the Akins High School ROTC will present the colors and Sam’s Club associate Chelsey Shumaker will perform the national anthem.
