Bentonville, Ark., Oct. 21, 2013 – Killer B’s BBQ, a competitive barbecue team from Evans, Ga., beat out 49 other teams to be named the overall champion of the third annual Sam’s Club National BBQ Tour. The champions will take home a prize of $50,000.
“It’s definitely an honor to be named the winner out of 50 of the country’s greatest BBQ competitors,” said Jan Burg, who competes with her husband Jim as half of the Killer B’s BBQ team. “We’re thankful to Sam’s Club and KCBS for bringing us together as well as stocking the quality meats, spices and supplies our team could always depend on throughout the tour.”
Introduced in 2011 as the country’s only continuous competitive barbecue series with the largest prize purse in the history of competitive barbecue, the Sam’s Club National BBQ Tour has distributed more than $1 million in prizes since its inception. All events are sanctioned and scored by Master Judges certified by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS).

Killer B’s BBQdrove 864 miles from their hometown of Evans, Ga., to attend the finals. Fifty teams from 26 states traveled a collective 154,244 miles to Bentonville, Ark., for the championship culmination of the 31-event tour. Killer B’s qualified for the National Championship at their local competition in Charleston, N.C., and the regional competition in Hendersonville, Tenn.
Jim and Jan Burg have been married for 17 years and have been on the competitive barbecue circuit for the past three. Jan is also the owner of a sandwich shop in Augusta and says she shops for business and home needs at Sam’s Club nearly every day for supplies.
Iowa Smokey D’s barbecue team of Des Moines, Iowa, took home $25,000 as Reserve Grand Champion of the competition, and Pigskin BBQ of Rockwell, Iowa, took third place overall. Awards were also granted in the categories of chicken, ribs, pork and brisket.
