Wal-Mart And Sam’s Club To Host Free Diabetes Screenings Nationwide
- "Diabetes Aware and Care" event helps those with diabetes receive the tools and education to help manage their condition -
BENTONVILLE, Ark., Sept. 6, 2005 — Of the 18 million people who have diabetes, nearly six million are unaware of their condition. An additional 41 million are at risk for developing the disease. Recognizing the need for diabetes awareness and management tips, Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB in partnership with Abbott’s Ross Products Division, makers of Glucerna® Bars and Shakes, Novartis Consumer Health, Inc., makers of Benefiber® & Lamisil AT® and the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) are hosting the “Diabetes Aware & Care” event at all Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB stores nationwide Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
At this special event, certified medical technicians will provide free health screenings, including blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure tests. Additionally, customers will receive complimentary product samples and a diabetes resource book reviewed by the AADE that offers helpful information about controlling diabetes through blood sugar monitoring, meal planning and exercise.
“Working with Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB allows us to directly reach large populations affected by diabetes, many of whom do not know they are at risk for diabetes or possibly even have the disease,” said Mary Austin, RD, MA, CDE and immediate past president of the AADE. “Diabetes can be managed and even prevented with diabetes education and the right care. That’s what this event is all about.”
Since its inception in 2001, Abbott’s Ross Products Division and Novartis Consumer Health, Inc. have helped coordinate the “Diabetes Aware & Care” event in partnership with Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB to encourage Americans to control diabetes through education, available at this event and throughout the year at www.walmart.com.
