FREE AUTUMN HEALTH & WELLNESS SCREENINGS ARRIVE AT SAM’S CLUBS OCT. 9
WHAT: To help customers detect a range of preventable health problems at the beginning of cold and flu season, Sam’s Club locations across the U.S. will host free health screenings – including bone density screenings for osteoporosis, testing for cholesterol and glucose and blood pressure checks – on Oct. 9. The free screenings are valued at more than $150 with one of the lowest-cost flu shot options also available on site.
The most recent screening events in July served more than 26,000 members and attendees, administering more than 105,000 vital tests across 400 locations.
Media may view the screening process, which is free and has already hosted thousands of visitors in other cities. To preview the event, we can provide for media phone interviews (or on-site interviews) with a local Sam’s Club pharmacist who can explain the timeliness and value of the free screenings and the importance of flu shots. Wash your hands as often as is practical. Colds are most commonly spread with objects or hands contaminated by the nasal secretions by someone who is infected.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Most of us touch our faces as many as 1 to 3 times every 5 minutes – nearly 200 to 600 times each day. While it can be a hard habit to break, it can prevent the direct spread of the cold from your hands to the susceptible areas of your face.
Limit contact with people who are sick. If you don’t want a cold you probably don’t want to intentionally expose yourself to people who have a cold. If you must, wash your hands afterwards if you touched them (as in shaking their hand).
Make sure to take a Vitamin D supplement (at least 2,000 IU per day). Vitamin D has recently been recognized as one of the most important nutrients for immune support. White blood cells have receptors for Vitamin D that may be involved in their activation to fight infection.
Supplement with extra Vitamin C (1,000 mg per day) as a general support for immune health. For children, a chewable Vitamin C is a great choice!
Take a good multivitamin. A daily multivitamin provides important nutrients for healthy immune function like Zinc, Selenium and Beta-Carotene/Vitamin A. Choose a multivitamin which matches your age and gender specific needs.
Eat healthy, high energy foods - Your body always needs fuel but when you’re sick a lot of your body’s energy is devoted to your immune system. Focusing on fruits, vegetables and whole grains will keep you fueled with antioxidant nutrition.
Get enough sleep and rest. Researchers have found that the people who had slept less than seven hours a night in the weeks before being exposed to the cold virus were about three times more likely to develop a full-fledged cold than those who had slept more.
Drink plenty of water. Dehydration can impact immune system function, so please be sure drink at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water each day.
Chronic stress has been shown to lower our immunity. Finding positive ways to offset the impact of stress can reduce your chance of catching a cold. Regular exercise, deep breathing exercises and restful activities can reduce your stress burden.
