DENTON, Texas, Sept. 20, 2010 – Sam’s Club opens in Denton Oct. 7, offering local business owners, college students and moms-on-the-go exceptional values on products from electronics to fresh produce and $4 generic prescriptions. The Club features a new layout that makes shopping faster and easier by placing the most purchased products in more convenient locations. The design and expanded merchandise selection are being introduced this year to Clubs throughout the country to bring the Sam’s Club brand—Savings Made Simplesm—to life.
More than 160 Club associates, along with community leaders and local dignitaries, will celebrate the official grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 7. Doors will open to Members at 9 a.m.
The 136,000-square-foot Club will be located at 2850 W. University Drive in the heart of Denton, conveniently located near the campuses of the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University. The Club is an anchor of the new Rayzor Ranch Marketplace, part of the 400-acre Rayzor Ranch mixed use development located at the northeast and southeast corners of Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 380.
Local leaders are excited about adding Sam’s Club to the mix of area businesses. “Many Denton citizens are loyal Sam’s shoppers, and these dollars will soon be staying in our community. On Oct. 7, we will be able to shop at Sam’s Club in Denton, and in so doing, help create local jobs, expand shopper choices, and help build our business community on our city’s northwest side,” said Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs. “Sam’s Club is part of the Rayzor Ranch development, and its opening is not only serving as a catalyst for this development, but helps signal that Denton is moving back into an upswing in economic vitality."
Denton Sam’s Club: Exceptional Value for Business, Home and Life
The Club will feature a wide variety of merchandise that reflects the growing diversity among warehouse club shoppers.
“More and more people turn to Sam’s Club to help save money in this tight economy,” said Club Manager Jayson Johnson. “Small-business owners, families and even college students are finding that their money goes further at Sam’s Club.”
A recent study found Sam’s Club saves consumers, on average, 30.4 percent on some of the most frequently purchased product categories versus grocery and specialty retailers.*
Sam’s Club makes it even easier for Members to add up their annual savings with an online calculator. In addition, Denton residents can now fill up their fuel tanks at the new, 12-pump Sam’s Club fuel station, offering gasoline and diesel fuel. A Home Efficiency aisle focuses on merchandise customers can use to decrease their home and business energy usage, such as CFL light bulbs, LED light fixtures, Energy Star® air conditioning units and small kitchen appliances.
“We offer the office supplies, food and cleaning items that Sam’s Club Members have come to expect,” said Johnson. “We also offer the latest technology for home and office, designer handbags and high quality jewelry.”

Club to Employ 160 Associates
The Club plans to employ approximately 160 associates. Six associates have worked for Sam’s Club or Walmart for more than 10 years. Club Manager Johnson started his career with Sam’s Club working in Regional Loss Prevention in West Des Moines, Iowa, in 2002.
Sam’s Club Celebrates Community Commitment
As part of the Sam’s Club commitment to give back to the communities it serves, associates from the Denton Club have selected several local organizations to receive a total of $15,000 in grants from the Walmart Foundation, including a $5,000 donation to the Shepherd’s Hand to aid in its mission to eliminate hunger in the area. Other recipients include the Denton Community Food Center, Denton Kiwanis, Denton County Friends of the Family, and Spirit Horse Therapeutic Center.
The new Sam’s Club will also fight hunger in the area by making regular product donations to the North Texas Food Bank, which serves 13 North Texas counties. The program is part of a partnership between Sam’s Club and Feeding America. Sam’s Club locations across the country regularly donate perishable food items to area hunger relief agencies, helping fight hunger in their communities and reducing food waste. Last year, Sam’s Club donated more than 13 million pounds to Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief charity.

Sam’s Club Commitment to Sustainability
In keeping with the Sam’s Club commitment to the environment, the new Club was constructed with energy-efficient technology and environmentally friendly features to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste.
One of the ways the new Sam’s Club eliminates energy waste is with daylight-harvesting skylights that reduce the amount of energy required to light the store by up to 75 percent daily. While Sam’s Club is not open 24-hours, it is occupied 24-hours a day. During the hours when the store is closed, the light level is reduced by more than 50 percent, also reducing energy levels used. LED lighting throughout the Club, including in the cooler/freezer box doors and jewelry counter, operates 70 percent more efficiently than traditional fluorescent light.
